Blog Day 5 USA: Snow blocks the road |
| June |
On Thursday morning, we went from Kelso a bit in the north-east direction on our way to Spokane (WA). We had two stops on our way to Spokane, but because of late heavy snowfall our plans were changed a bit
On our way to Mount Rainier National Park we passed Mount St.Helens, one of the last volcanos of the USA that erupted (in the eighties). However halfway we had to turn, as the road was blocked.
Also when we arrived at Mount Rainier there was a bit of disappointment, because the Chinook Pass was still closed because of the snow.
We totally got the reason for the roadblock when we entered the park on the south-side. Most of the trails at about 1800 meters were covered with a lot of snow, sometimes a meter high. Also at the visitors center there was no other way than turning back in the direction where we came from.
However, this the park with the most glaciers of the USA and those were beautiful! Giant powerful waterfalls and sometimes more than 2,5meters of snow on the side of the road. It was not cold at all, I tink about 12 degrees.
It was still a long way to Spokane. The landscape is mainly farmland with all kinds of vegetables, grassland, grain and potatoes. I think I have seen so many haybales and straw.... enough for the whole country at home!
